The recently released 2024 GOP presidential primary poll revealed a massive lead for former President Donald Trump over his prospective rivals. Still, it also showed strong performances from Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis, both of whom tied for second place.
The poll, which was conducted by Politico/Morning Consult, shows Trump pulling in a commanding 52% of the vote. Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida governor Ron DeSantis tied for second with 15% of the vote each. Rep. Matt Gaetz trailed far behind with 8% of the vote.
Trump’s lead was expected, being that he still enjoys a great deal of admiration and support from the Republican base. Still, it’s important to remember that the 2024 primary election is still years away and a lot can change over time.
Haley and DeSantis’ strong showings were perhaps the most surprising results of the poll. Although Haley is popular among some Republicans, she is also viewed as a moderate, and her showing goes to show that there is still a healthy number of ‘compromise’ minded members of the party.
DeSantis, on the other hand, is considered to be a conservative favorite and his rise to second place is indicative of GOP voters’ desire for a candidate from the party’s right wing.
Gaetz’s distant eighth place showing is likely indicative of the controversies surrounding him, including those concerning an ongoing FBI investigation into his possible ties to improper lobbying and misuse of campaign funds.
Ultimately, this poll serves as a good reminder of the fluidity of political dynamics, especially so far out from the election. Although Donald Trump is still the frontrunner, this poll indicates that Haley and DeSantis are both primed to challenge his lead in the coming months and years.
