Donald Trump has made it clear that he does not identify as someone who is similar to Adolf Hitler or someone who follows the ideologies reflected in Adolf Hitler’s book, Mein Kampf. This comes in response to a commentator recently comparing Trump to Hitler. Trump tweeted a response, claiming he has never read Mein Kampf and denied any connection or comparison between Hitler and himself.
This book, which is German for “My Struggle”, was written by Hitler in the 1920s. It details his life story and Nazi Party philosophy, as well as his disdain towards Jews, Slavs, and other minority groups. It has been heavily criticized by historians and political experts for serving as one of the foundationally toxic ideologies which fueled the Nazi Party and which ultimately motivated the atrocities of the Holocaust.
Trump has rejected the characterization of him as being in any way similar to Hitler, and tweeted ‘I have never read the book, Mein Kampf, which is unfortunate and irrelevant.’ His refusal to even discuss his likeness to Hitler has been met with some criticism, and has further increased his dubious reputation in the eyes of some.
Trump is no stranger to comparison with dictators from history. In the past, he has been compared to leaders such as President Putin of Russia and to North Korea’s Prime Minister Kim Jong Un, an argument he has also denounced. He has a consistent track record of condemning the atrocities of these historically tyrannical regimes and their leaders.
The ‘Mein Kampf’ comparisons were particularly surprising for many, considering Trump’s long-held and close to relationship Jews, both for business and personal relationships.
Overall, the idea of Trump being linked in comparison to Hitler certainly sparked the interests of many commentators and has added to the discussion of Trump’s reputation. Ultimately, it is clear that Trump adamantly denies any comparison of himself to Hitler as well as any involvement with the ideologies expressed in the book, Mein Kampf.
