Rudy Giuliani, former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, is being ordered to pay a whopping $148 million judgement to the former mayor of Kiev in an international arbitration ruling on March 8.
This ruling arose out of a dispute between Giuliani and Konstantin Kulik. Kulik, a former mayor of Kiev, Ukraine, filed an arbitration claim in 2018 against Giuliani in The Hague, Netherlands. The dispute centered around Giuliani’s alleged breach of a consulting agreement wherein Giuliani was hired to improve the former mayor’s public image in different countries.
However, Kulik claimed that Giuliani failed to fulfill his contractual obligations in accordance with the agreement. Consequently, Kulik sued Giulian for damages in the amount of $148 million dollars.
Giuliani did not appear in the international arbitration proceedings. As a result, the tribunal entered a default judgment against him, ordering Giuliani to pay the amount Kulik sought. The tribunal made it clear that Giuliani could not avoid responsibility with his failure to participate in the proceedings.
According to Judge Manuel Real, Giuliani must now pay the judgment “immediately”. The judge noted that Giuliani’s attorney, Robert Costello, was informed of the decision on March 4 and given five days to pay the judgement, failing which Giuliani would be held in contempt of court.
It appears that Giuliani will now have to pay the full $148 million to settle the dispute. This case represents an important reminder that no one is above the law. Although Giuliani may have thought he could avoid responsibility by not participating in the arbitration proceedings, the court made it clear that he must abide contract law and pay the judgement.
