The 2020 election season in America was one of the most contentious and hotly contested in history. It pitted President Donald Trump against his opponents, in both the Democratic and Republican parties. But now, as the dust settles, a remarkable thing has happened. Trump’s former Republican rivals, most of whom did not endorse him during the election, have come to his defense.
This is in response to an effort in several states to remove President Trump’s name from ballots that would appear in the 2022 election. On March 23, the Republican National Committee passed a resolution in support of keeping Trump’s name on the ballot, and a handful of prominent Republican leaders have spoken out in agreement.
Among those who have pledged their support for Trump are former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, who called the effort to remove Trump “a travesty of justice”. He was joined by former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who said that “nobody should be rewriting the rules to change the outcomes of democratic elections”.
Former United Nations ambassador and former Massachusetts Gov. Nikki Haley said that the effort was an “abuse of power”. She added that “It’s not up to the media or political opponents to decide which candidates should be allowed on ballots”.
The GOP’s unified effort to protect Trump’s name on the ballot is a remarkable shift from its previous stance. Before the election, many prominent Republicans had publicly denounced Trump and refused to back his candidacy.
Their sudden unity of purpose may be an attempt to unify the party ahead of the crucial midterm elections in 2022. It’s already clear that the divisions left by the 2020 election will not be easily healed. But this display of solidarity may be a sign that the party is beginning to work together to protect its interests and values.
No matter what the outcome, it’s undeniable that Trump will be a major factor in the 2022 elections. Regardless of the Republican National Committee’s move, as well as the messages of support from his former rivals, Trump will remain a lightning rod of debate and controversy in the U.S. for the foreseeable future.
