An Army officer has alleged that he was punished for providing an accurate account of the military’s response to the Capitol riot in January.
Lt. Col. Emily Rainey spoke to news outlets on January 6, 2021 about how the military responded to the Capitol riot. According to Rainey, the D.C. National Guard was ordered to stand down rather than respond to the attack.
After Rainey’s statements, the U.S. Army reportedly opened an investigation into her actions. The reason for the investigation remains unknown, however Rainey believes it is a result of her speaking out against the military’s response to the Capitol riot.
Rainey has since filed a complaint alleging reprisal from the Army. She also noted that her “very clear and honest testimony has in no way been deemed false or incorrect.”
Rainey’s attorney, Peter Temes, stated that “It’s outrageous that the military is launching an investigation against Lt. Col. Rainey for honoring her oath to tell the truth. It appears they are punishing her for going public with the truth.”
Rainey is currently planning to take the matter to court in order to protect her rights as a service member. While it remains unclear how this case will end, it is clear that the military’s response to Rainey has been seen as a potential violation of her rights.
The Army’s response to this incident is disconcerting, to say the least. Not only does it potentially send the message that service members should not speak out against the military’s response to these sorts of incidents, but it also casts doubt on the military’s commitment to providing an honest and open account of its actions.
It is this lack of transparency that has the potential to further degrade the trust of the American people in its armed forces.
