According to watchdog group Capital Research Center, Soros’ Open Society Foundation (OSF) is providing substantial support to Left-Wing Non-Governmental Organization (LWNGO) which finances the “Palestinian-led grassroots movement for justice, liberation and equality” campaigns. These campaigns include the lobbying initiatives and protests led by the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. This movement seeks to pressure Israel into withdrawing from the occupied territories and providing fairer treatment of Palestinians in the region. The watchdog group claims that OSF is a major backer of the LWNGO which finances the pro-Palestine BDS campaign. According to the group’s research, OSF has provided $2,758,000 to the organization since 2014. The LWNGO is led by Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib, a pro-Palestine activist who made history as the first Muslim woman elected to the US Congress. Its aims include fighting for the “dignity and rights” for the Palestinian people and for the organization “to become an influential force in the global BDS movement.” For the last few years, OSF and LWNGO have been targeted by conservative groups and politicians for their pro-Palestine advocacy. These groups have railed against the messaging and promotion of the BDS movement, arguing that it promotes anti-Semitism. They have also linked OSF’s funding to the LWNGO’s BDS activities. In response to these criticisms, OSF issued a statement saying it ideologically supports the Palestinian right for self-determination, but not all the tactics and activities of the BDS movement.
