CNN and ABC News announced this week that they will be the co-hosts of the first two Republican presidential debates in Iowa and New Hampshire.
The debates — which will take place in Iowa in August and New Hampshire in September — will provide candidates with a stage to make their case to potential primary electors only weeks before the closely watched voting.
The two news outlets are partnering with American Media Inc., a media holding company that owns several other news organizations, such as The National Enquirer, in order to broadcast the debates.
This partnership with American Media will make the debates available to a larger audience than ever before. According to a joint statement from the three media outlets, the debates will be livestreamed on all of their various digital outlets and simulcast on ABC and CNN.
The debates will also be carried nationally by ABC Radio and CNN En Español, the Spanish-language partnership between CNN and Univision.
This marks the first time that both CNN and ABC will co-host a presidential debate, and both outlets are eager to provide their viewers and readers with an in-depth look at the Republican presidential hopefuls.
“At a time of great partisanship in our nation, we aim to provide viewers with thoughtful and substantive coverage of these critical debates throughout the early voting states,” said CNN president Jeff Zucker.
The two debates will be moderated by ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos and will feature a panel of top political reporters.
The first debate will be held in Des Moines, Iowa on August 5th, with the second debate taking place in Manchester, New Hampshire on September 8th. Both debates will last one hour and thirty minutes and will be broadcast nationally.
The debates in Iowa and New Hampshire are vitally important for the Republican presidential field, as it marks their first chance to make their case to the American people ahead of the primary season. With the announcement of these debates, the race for the Republican nomination is about to begin in earnest.
