At a rally in Iowa on Friday, President Donald Trump blasted John Kerry, the former Secretary of State and special US envoy on climate change, for his actions on climate activism.
The President pointed out that Kerry’s initiative is “destroying our country,” citing the number of jobs that have been lost due to green legislation and the economic strain of rising energy costs. He went on to criticize Kerry for flying to Beijing on a private jet to negotiate a climate deal and then flying on a military aircraft back to the United States.
“He destroys our country, and then he gets on his little jet and he goes off to China,” the President said. “He’s negotiating against us in the largest country in the world…and we give him military planes to fly around on.”
Trump criticized what he sees as Kerry’s hypocritical attitude towards climate change and his advocacy for international initiatives and carbon taxes that are hurting US workers and consumers.
“John Kerry, we have a message for you,” the President said. “You should be ashamed of yourself. You have done enough damage to our country. It’s time to end this farce, and I make a solemn vow to the American people: We will stop the destruction of our country and put an end to John Kerry’s climate activism.”
The President’s remarks drew loud cheers from the crowd, and the Iowa rally was considered one of his strongest in recent months.Kerry, for his part, has yet to respond to the President’s criticism but has been an outspoken advocate for climate action, calling it “the right thing to do in the face of the global climate crisis.”
The President’s comments come at a time when the US is facing rising tensions and increasing polarisation over climate change, an issue that is fracturing both political parties. As the President and other key political figures continue to debate how the US should address the climate crisis, one thing is certain – John Kerry’s role in the battle over climate policies has become a central point of contention.
From his appearance in Iowa, it seems clear that President Trump is committed to putting an end to Kerry’s climate activism and preserving the current US energy system. Whether or not his stance is popular outside of the GOP remains to be seen, but the President’s clear message signals that he is not ready to back down on the issue of climate change and the environment.
