In a bid to correct the record and draw a sharp contrast between his health care policy and President Donald Trump’s, Bidens campaign has hit back at Trump’s vow to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
The law guarantees health care coverage to millions of Americans — including people with preexisting conditions — and the Biden campaign insists that undoing the law would just put more people at risk of losing coverage and being denied the care they need.
“The Affordable Care Act is a lifeline for millions of Americans who can’t access and afford health care without it,” Biden campaign spokesperson MJ Henshaw said in a statement. “Donald Trump and Republicans have spent the past four years trying to overturn the law and to take away its life-saving protections from Americans — even as he claims to be protecting those best served by the healthcare law.”
Henshaw went on to criticize Trump for his campaign promise to repeal and replace the law with a plan that “still puts individuals and families at risk of losing the coverage and access to care that the ACA protects.”
The Biden campaign has been pointing to Trump’s repeated efforts to dismantle the law since the president began his reelection bid. Republicans have tried to repeal the law dozens of times, and the Trump administration has joined a lawsuit to invalidate the ACA in its entirety.
The Biden campaign has repeatedly argued that the administration’s efforts to repeal the health law demonstrate Trump’s lack of concern for Americans’ health and is in stark contrast to Biden’s pledge to protect and expand the ACA.
Biden has promised if elected he will protect people with pre-existing conditions and the Affordable Care Act by overturning what he calls “Trump’s illegal rings that have made it harder for people to access healthcare and coverage” and also offer a public health insurance option.
The Biden campaign believes this strategy would extend care to millions more Americans and is citing a recent report from the Centers for Health and Human Services that released estimates showing an impending Affordable Care Act repeal could result in 17.8 million uninsured Americans.
The Biden campaign insists that if elected, Biden would fully protect and expand upon the law’s gains in providing affordable coverage to millions of Americans. As a result, he plans to restore faith that health care coverage and access are the right of all Americans.
The Biden-Harris campaign is committed to ensuring access to quality, affordable health care for all.
