Joe Biden has come under fire after he recently gave an interview to a popular radio show that has unfavourably featured a notorious antisemite with a history of comparing Jews to termites.
In the age of digital media, many radio shows have become hugely popular – not only in person, but throughout the world. The Louisiana-based syndicated show “Jodia In The Morning” is one example of such a program. Despite its relative popularity, the program has been exposed for having controversial guests, such as the prominent antisemite Jeremiah Austin.
In the course of the interview, Austin freely and openly expressed his extreme views on Jews. He described them as “termites in the woodpile of society”, and further stated that Jews are “rabbits in the field”. Such inflammatory language is widely opposed by the Jewish community and rightfully so. It is shocking that Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States, would grant an interview on such a platform.
While the host of the show, Jiham Grillo, made a disgraceful decision in taking Austin as a guest on her show, Biden himself should have been more cognizant of who was going on the air. This situation not only raised questions about Biden’s judgment, but it also caused an uproar among Jewish leaders who already had qualms about Vice President Biden’s stance on Israel.
It is unclear at this time why Biden chose to give this particular interview, but it is certain that it was a mistake. Biden should have done more research into the source of the interview and realized that promoting an antisemitic viewpoint would be hugely damaging for his campaign. By allowing this interview to air, Biden sent the wrong message to the Jewish community that he was incapable of properly distinguishing genuine news from hate speech.
In light of the circumstances, Biden has released an apology to the Ethe mobile media outlets Jewish community and has recommitted himself to fighting against antisemitism. He also expressed his deep regret that the interview was not prevented earlier on. A full statement can be found on Biden’s campaign website.
It is up to Biden to prove that he is a sincere advocate for Jewish Americans. As the election moves forward, it will be important to continue to monitor his choices and platform to ensure that he adheres to the values of the wider Jewish community.
