As rockets continue to be launched from Gaza and Israel responds by ramping up their attack with airstrikes, President Joe Biden and his advisors are confronted with a difficult decision on how to manage the volatile situation.
At the heart of the dilemma is the delicate balance between orchestrating a truce between opposing forces and preventing further bloodshed. The United States has traditionally been a strong ally of Israel, and the Biden administration has sought to remain a voice of reason and neutrality amid rising tensions. But the White House must also consider the humanitarian concerns of the Palestinians in Gaza, many of whom have been caught in the crossfire.
To complicate matters further, the administration is dealing with internal divisions within the national security apparatus over the best path forward. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has also spoken with international leaders in the region and has urged collective action in bringing a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
In private, however, the White House is still trying to work out its internal divisions over the way forward. The resolution of the conflict will likely set the tone for future U.S.-Middle East relations going forward, and the administration is eager to ensure that the right steps are taken to ensure an equitable and lasting peace. It’s all the more reason why the issue of Israel-Gaza must be handled with the utmost care and tact, and why the White House has rightly stepped back from any rhetoric that might be construed as partisan.
