New York Mayor Eric Adams has been accused of multiple counts of sexual assault. The case, which is currently pending in the Supreme Court, was brought forth by two anonymous female victims.
According to a statement issued by the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., Adams is accused of using, among others, his public office to engage in coercive, manipulative, and predatory sexual behavior. Specifically, the statement alleges that Adams “subjected them to unwanted sexual advances and requests for sexual acts, and in one instance, a threat of violence against a woman he was dating.”
The allegations have been made against Adams as he finishes his first term as mayor. Adams is a Democrat who has been a vocal advocate for gender equality. He has also been an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and is the founder of the Coalition for Maternal Wellness, a non-profit organization aimed at providing comprehensive maternal health services.
Adams has denied all allegations and his lawyer has described them as “unsubstantiated accusations”. In a press conference, Adams said, “We fully plan to challenge these allegations in court. I urge people not to rush to judgement. These accusations have not been proven and I am confident that they will be proven to be false.”
The public has been divided in their reaction to the news. Supporters of Adams have expressed their support, while critics have called for his removal. There have also been calls for an independent investigation into Adams’ alleged behavior.
The case is still pending and it may still be a while before all the facts come to light. In the meantime, it is important for all of us to remember the importance of treating everyone with respect and to never forget the victims of sexual assault.
