In a world where headline news frequently splashes viral stories of political bashing and personal attacks on the internet, it has become increasingly difficult to escape from the drama. This phenomenon has been especially true for supporters of President Trump, as the current administration’s rhetoric has been particularly savage and controversial. Trump backers have come under fire for their loyalty to the 45th president, with some liberals and conservatives alike accusing them of being out of touch or cruel.
Vulgarities, insults, and baseless attacks – Trump supporters are often subject to all three. It appears as though followers of the President have adopted his style of language and launched their own offensive ad hominems. They appear to be divided into two camps – those who are defending Trump from his opponents, and those who are attacking anyone who disagrees with them.
On one hand, it is understandable why someone would enthusiastically defend a figure that they view to be a positive influence. They take pride in the fact that someone in power is supporting their views and vehemently disagree with any opposition to their beliefs. Unfortunately, the vocal minority of Trump fans have lost the ability to make rational arguments, devolving into aggressive and often hurtful outbursts that reflect poorly on the identity of the beliefs that they are defending.
On the other side of the issue are people who vehemently oppose President Trump and appear to be unable to make their point without resorting to name-calling and personal attacks. It is one thing to argue against an opinion, but angry outbursts often do more to affecting one’s reputation than to actually sway the viewer’s opinion.
Overall, it is clear that modern political discourse has deteriorated to a point where attacks have become commonplace. Some of this can certainly be attributed to the rhetoric and tone of the current administration, and a lack of civil dialogue has become the norm for both supporters and opponents of the President. The only way to move past this is to encourage respectful debates and avoid lash-outs that are not productive and only further divide the country.
