In a gripping example of the unchecked power of antisemitism, the head of an online campaign to identify and report instances of hate speech against Jews recently reported that his efforts unearthed doctors and dentists openly spewing anti-Semitic content.
The reported uptick in hate speech has become the focus of David Collier, the director of the UK Campaign Against Antisemitism, a coalition of volunteers who monitor and investigate instances of hate against Jews. Through their online platform, Collier and his volunteers have discovered that while some of the spread of online hate is the work of ordinary people, “many of the worst offenders were healthcare professionals such as doctors and dentists.”
“As the guardian of public health, we believe that healthcare professionals should be held to a higher standard and that any reports of inappropriate behavior should be taken seriously,” Collier said.
Collier went on to reveal that the word ‘Jew’ was occasionally found in a negative context in the comments and posts of those healthcare professionals who were identified. “Clearly, this is unacceptable, and blatant examples of anti-Semitic hate speech,” said Collier.
With the rise of hate speech, the responsibility falls on us to recognize this unacceptable behavior and stand up against it. By actively pursuing our own initiatives, whether through online campaigns, social media engagement, or even greater vigilance when reporting to relevant authorities, we can contribute to a more tolerant society.
Collier concluded by stressing that the healthcare profession is held to a higher standard and that any inappropriate content should be reported to the relevant authorities. “We must not be complacent about antisemitism and its dangers, or understate the gravity of the situation. It’s essential that the public collectively works to ensure it does not become normalized,” Collier said.
