With the 2020 election season in full swing, the candidates vying for the Republican presidential nomination in Iowa have been at center stage. The latest poll conducted by the Des Moines Register and CNN finds current US President Donald Trump leading the field with 29 percent support.
Trailing behind is former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley and Florida governor Ron Desantis, both of whom are tied in second with 10 percent support. While both candidates remain relatively unknown, their ties to the Trump establishment could be a powerful combination when it comes to competing against Trump’s dominance.
Aside from Trump and the two contenders for second place, the rest of the field lags considerably in the most recent survey. Former Ohio governor John Kasich holds 5 percent support, followed by former Massachusetts governor Bill Weld at 4 percent and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee at one percent.
The survey also reveals that Trump maintains his lead even after his support for the controversial Secret Service expansion, which has been met with mixed reactions from Iowans. The survey results come as no surprise, given Trump’s widespread recognition and popularity in the state.
Despite the latest data, the Iowa caucuses are yet to be held and the final results remain to be seen. Trump, Haley, and Desantis will have to make convincing cases for their candidacies if they wish to secure victory in the state. For now, the race for the Republican nomination in Iowa is far from over.
