The comment made by President Donald Trump regarding North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un being a “dictator” has sparked criticism from those who have rallied against his controversial immigration policies and his penchant for attacking people on social media.
The comment, made during an April 17th interview with the Associated Press, was in response to a question about Mr. Kim. When asked whether he thought Mr. Kim was a “rational actor” the President said: “He’s a pretty smart cookie, but he’s a dictator – certainly a dictator.”
The comment struck a nerve with many, particularly since it comes on the heels of a series of controversial executive orders signed by Mr. Trump. These orders detain and deport undocumented immigrants, bar citizens of some predominantly Muslim countries from entering the country, and expand the U.S.’s ability to use force against terrorism suspects.
The President’s comment was interpreted by some as a double standard, since he has praised authoritarian leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, but harshly criticized democratically-elected leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel. This sentiment was echoed by Merkley’s office who issued a statement saying, “It’s striking how willing the President is to use his bully pulpit to defend those he likes, while ruthlessly attacking those he doesn’t like, regardless of who their people democratically chose as their leader.”
There is also the ongoing concern that the President’s comments may inflame tension between the United States and North Korea, which could escalate into violence. This was reiterated by the North Korean government who said in a statement, “We can never accept a dictator’s statement that nonchalantly insults our supreme leader, who is loved and respected.”
It appears that President Trump’s administration has been trying to address some of the criticism he has received from the international community by toning down his rhetoric. However, this incident serves as a reminder that such attempts may be in vain.
