President Donald Trump recently made headlines when he commented on Univision. During an interview he was asked about the many investigations by the FBI or the Department of Justice that some of his political enemies are prohibited from speaking about. In response he said he could “weaponize” these institutions against his enemies.
His comments have led to widespread controversy. Some see the statement as a clear threat to use the significant governmental resources of these powerful institutions against his political opponents, while others see the comment as an ordinary statement of fact.
Those in support of Trump’s statement point out that the President does, in fact, have the authority as the Head of State to use the FBI and DOJ for important investigations, such as those involving national security, corruption, and civil rights. It should also be noted that the President does have the authority to grant the DOJ or FBI resources and jurisdiction for specific investigations.
On the other hand, the opposing side claims that the President’s remarks send a very dangerous message. These individuals argue that the President should not have the power to use federal institutions to target political opponents, as it could lead to a state of political tyranny. It may also create a precedent by which future presidents could use the FBI or DOJ to strategically favor their friends and silence their enemies.
At this point, it is unclear how the President and his administration plan to use the FBI and DOJ in the future. In the meantime, it is important for citizens to stay informed and maintain contextual integrity of the President’s statement, which in this case is quite controversial.
