Now, the President’s defense is turning to the events of the early morning of January 6, in an attempt to back up his claims. In this vein, the President and his supporters have continued to platform some of the more fringe theories of the circumstances that surrounded the assault on the US Capitol in a bid to place blame for the January 6 insurrection on others.
Among the most conspicuous of these fringe theories involves the baseless accusation of Antifa infiltration into the ranks of the insurrectionists on January 6. Despite thorough investigation into the individuals who breached the Capitol, of the 292 people who have been charged, less than a handful have been identified as possible members of far-right Antifa-affiliated organizations.
The President and his supporters have also alleged a foreign government actor was behind the attack, in an effort to tie this event to his baseless narrative of foreign interference in the election. However, there is no evidence to support this, as the vast majority of the individuals arrested were American citizens.
Furthermore, this piece of a defense comes in the face of a US intelligence report released in May that found no evidence that Antifa, white supremacists, or members of any other organization incited or facilitated the events of January 6.
The most recent appeal to these fringe theories is yet another example of the President’s unwavering insistence on undermining and undermining the legitimacy of the election results, and conveniently deflecting blame for the attack on the US Capitol, despite clear evidence implicating President Trump himself and his supporters in the riot.
