In a time of political strife, Hollywood has found yet another topic to deeply divide its members: the Israel-Hamas war. While some of Tinsel Town’s more outspoken celebrities have used their platforms to certify their allegiance, many others are trying desperately to separate the politics from the question of what is morally right or wrong.
The stakes are high — examining the two sides of the conflict potentially alienates fans, sponsors and supporters. Given the implications, many stars have chosen to remain silent despite having strong political views on the topic. Those that have spoken out, however, have made sure to do so in a carefully worded statement that avoids causes.
Among those to recently make a declaration was pop star Lady Gaga, who tweeted a message of solidarity to the “innocent men, women and children” impacted by the conflict. While some criticized her for not acknowledging other parties in her message, her message was clear: people must come together to stop the violence.
Despite the cautionary nature of these statements, some have had their projects and agents put on the line due to their vocal stance. Actor Billy Porter recently found himself in the midst of controversy when he posted a picture with a Palestinian flag on Instagram. Shortly afterwards, his agent dropped him and he vowed to continue standing with “the millions around the world who choose to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people”.
At the same time, not everyone is eager to voice their opinions on the matter. Steven Spielberg, one of Hollywood’s most revered reservers has, despite being part of firmly established pro-Israeli groups, chosen not to comment on the recent violence. It is his silence that offers up an example to others.
In the midst of a deeply divided political landscape, it is not difficult to find a source of inspiration in Hollywood’s example of reserving judgement until a two-state solution can be reached. Sure, the world of celebrity has its outspoken and opinionated but at the same time its willingness of being mute is a sign of respect to all sides of the conflict. Rather than lodge complaints and accusations, the Hollywood elite are instead using their platforms to make calls for peace.
What the future holds remains to be seen and the Israel-Hamas war has proven to become a source of further division within Hollywood. But even in spite of this, unity remains key and it is that which will ultimately help bring about a resolution.
