The Republican Majority Leader of the United States Senate, Mitch McConnell, has come under much scrutiny and criticism in recent weeks due to his handling of certain legislative matters. While many in his party have criticized him for failing to move on key items, some of his most vocal critics have come from within his own party.
The latest in this string of criticism came when Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) posted a tweet criticizing McConnell for his alleged lack of leadership when it comes to advancing a bill that would expand background checks for gun purchases. Senator Paul tweeted that “This moment does not cry out for Mitch McConnell” and that “We need new leadership in the Senate.”
The tweet has reverberated throughout the Senate and has sparked debate as to whether or not McConnell’s leadership style is actually hindering the progress of the Republican Party. While some have argued that McConnell’s refusal to move forward on the gun bill is simply due to his lack of planning and foresight, others believe it is simply because he does not want to let go of the Senate’s filibuster power.
No matter which explanation one subscribes to, the criticism of McConnell is unwarranted. It is true that he has had difficulty making progress in the Senate, but that should not detract from McConnell’s credentials. During his time as Majority Leader, McConnell has worked hard to advance the Republican agenda and has passed a number of bills that have been beneficial to both his party and the nation as a whole.
Ultimately, while Senator Paul’s frustration with Mitch McConnell is understandable, it would be wise to remember that the job of the Majority Leader is not to please everyone but to get the job done. As Majority Leader, McConnell has managed to do that and should be respected for it.
