Today marks a significant victory for the American people, as the Senate passed a spending bill that will prevent a government shutdown. The bill passed despite the efforts of House minority leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to delay the vote.
Senator Schumer and his allies worked hard to ensure that certain critical measures were included in the bill. These measures include disaster relief funding for Puerto Rico, more resources for Medicare and Medicaid, and a provision to allow the government to borrow money through the summer to avoid the threat of another shutdown.
At the end of the voting session, Senator Schumer released a statement expressing his gratitude for the votes that allowed the bill to pass. He said, “Tonight, we can finally say good night for the American people. We averted yet another government shutdown, ensuring vital services remain open and Americans can keep their lights on.”
The passage of the new legislation also signals a particularly helpful victory for the still-struggling Puerto Rican people. The island and its citizens have been struggling since the 2017 hurricane season, and the bill includes $1 billion in aid, in addition to temporary housing for those who have been displaced.
While both Republicans and Democrats have expressed their approval of the bill, it is important to note that this is only a short-term legislative fix. Congress will soon need to tackle other pressing issues such as rising national debt, to ensure the future of our nation.
Still, today we can take a moment to celebrate and be grateful for the progress made to avoid yet another government shutdown. Senator Schumer and his allies deserve recognition for their hard work in crafting a bill that is in the best interest of the people.
