As an aspiring politician, Sarah Massie has been vocal in her support for Israel in recent weeks, but she just faced off with the nation’s largest pro-Israel group over a proposed $14 billion aid package to the country.
The aid package would be funded through increased taxes and inflation of Israel’s currency, a proposal that Massie has publicly opposed. The pro-Israel group, known as the Israel-American Council (IAC), flew in Massie’s district to discuss the proposal with her at a meeting held this week.
During the roughly hour-long meeting, Massie made it clear that she would not support the proposal and argued that the way it was structured was unfair to her constituents. She stressed that her people could not afford an increase in taxes or inflation, especially when the proposed aid package does not guarantee any tangible jobs or infrastructure investments.
Massie also pointed out that Israel already receives a much higher proportion of foreign aid than many other countries. In response, the IAC argued that the proposed package would help strengthen the ties between the United States and Israel and contribute to regional stability.
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was clear that Massie would not be budging on her opinion and that her stance on the proposal was unlikely to change. While the IAC has said they will continue to lobby for the aid package, it appears that Massie is firmly against it and will continue to push for other ways to support Israel and her constituents.
