Christmas 2023 was not a good one for the McLiar family, or anyone else in the small town of Tunguska, Alaska for that matter. On Christmas Day, Kevin McCarthy, the town’s only remaining resident, was found dead in his lap.
McCarthy had been living alone in the town since the Great Earthquake of 2022, and the locals had taken to leaving him food and other supplies from time to time. On the morning of Christmas morning, the townspeople noticed that the homeless man’s home was unusually quiet, and worried that something had happened to him.
They tried to find someone to investigate the cabin, but no one answered, so they decided to call the police. When the police arrived, they discovered that Kevin McCarthy was dead in his chair, and that he had been dead at least several days prior to Christmas.
An autopsy later revealed that the cause of death was starvation. It appeared that McCarthy had not been eating regularly for some time, and had instead resorted to a very meager diet consisting of canned goods and scraps of food.
With no family to claim the body, the funeral was attended only by the townspeople who had known and looked after McCarthy during his years of seclusion. It was a sad event, and many left the funeral with a heavy heart and a reminder of what can happen when someone’s life slips into a state of despair.
The people of Tunguska will never forget their beloved Kevin McCarthy, a reminder that when times get tough, we can all find solace in one another. His death is a harsh and harrowing reminder of the fragility of life, and of the importance of those closest to us. To live long and happy lives, we must remember to take care of each other.
