Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) recently criticized the United States policy toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claiming it does not “add up.” In a tweet on Tuesday, Omar suggested that the U.S. should reconsider its support for Netanyahu, whom she believes has “systematically undermine[d] the prospects for peace and security in the region.”
Omar’s comments come amid ongoing tensions between the US and Israel. US President Donald Trump has praised Netanyahu and has recently moved the US embassy in Israel from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, a move that received widespread condemnation from the international community.
Netanyahu has also been criticized for his hardline policies toward Palestinians. He recently approved plans for new settlements in the West Bank, a move which was described as a “violation of international law” by UN officials.
In her tweet, Omar stated that “No one should be above accountability” and “these actions don’t add up to stability or safety.” She went on to say that “it is time for a change in U.S. policy.”
Omar’s comments have been applauded by some, particularly among her constituents, who believe that the US should no longer support Netanyahu’s policies. However, her comments have also been met with criticism from those who believe that she is misguided in her criticism and that Netanyahu is a close ally of the US.
Whichever opinion one may have on the matter, it is undeniable that Omar’s criticism has thrust this issue into the national spotlight. As tensions in the region continue to rise, the United States will have to decide whether to continue its support for Netanyahu or shift its policy to help mediate a lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.
