President Joe Biden has reportedly become increasingly frustrated with his dismal poll numbers, according to sources close to the White House.
The latest polling from Gallup shows that Biden’s approval rating has dipped below 50% – it is currently at 44%. This is an alarming statistic for a new president who assumed office with high expectations and plenty of hope.
It is well known that Biden promised to be a unifying, leading figure during his election campaign. However, recent developments in the US, such as a pandemic, the widely criticized police tactics during the Black Lives Matter protests as well as an overall lack of faith in the government’s actions have all weighed heavily on Biden’s approval rating.
Compounding the matter is the fact that Biden can no longer rely on his strong narrative throughout his presidential campaign. During the same Gallup poll, a majority of people no longer think Biden is ‘focused on issues that are most important to the American people’ and almost two-thirds of Americans now have a weak opinion of how the administration is dealing with the nation’s biggest challenges.
As such, it comes as no surprise that significant internal frustrations have been expressed within the Biden camp. Sources say the president has taken to meetings in the White House to vent his anger on the matter, citing his frustration with his lack of progress on economic issue and how the pandemic has damaged public opinion of the administration.
To turn things around, Biden has begun intensifying his effort to reach out to American citizens, with regular addresses on TV and a series of interviews with leading publications. His approach has been to increase his visibility and continue to push for his progressive economic programs.
When asked to comment on the president’s reaction to his dismal popularity figures, the White House stated that Biden remains confident in the continued progress of his agenda. The spokesman was also keen to remind that it is still early days and that polls have a tendency to fluctuate.
It remains to be seen whether Biden’s attempts to retrench his public approval rating will work in his favor. Only time will tell if the president can turn the situation around and make a successful comeback.
