The impending deadline for government funding is fast approaching however, a key member of the House Freedom Caucus appears pessimistic. Representative Mark Meadows (R-NC) has predicted that House Republicans will fall short of their desired goals.
In an interview on “Fox News Sunday”, Meadows discussed the lack of consensus between Republicans and Democrats on spending. “I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think we’re going to have a resolution,” he stated on the air.
Meadows is closely aligned with President Trump and has been a driving force in the contentious debate regarding government funding. Last Friday, Trump reversed his position on the budget bill and urged congressional representatives to come to an agreement.
Despite Meadows’ skepticism, other members of the House Freedom Caucus remain hopeful. Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) expressed his assurance that Trump’s reversal will bring both sides together to reach a deal.
It is important to note that, in this current government spending battle, Republicans and Democrats have their own distinct goals. Democrats have made it clear that they do not want a budget bill to include funding for Trump’s proposed border wall.
The House Freedom Caucus is a group of conservative Republicans determined to make their party’s stance on certain issues known. Furthermore, they plan to bring about policy change that will better serve their constituents.
It remains to be seen whether or not they will be successful in achieving their objectives. A looming deadline leaves some uncertainty about the future of government funding. With key members like Meadows set in their own stances, an agreement between both sides appears to be uncertain.
