In a recent surprise move, former Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey has pushed back on calls for him to drop out of the race for the White House and has taken direct aim at fellow Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump. Christie has launched a major ad blitz against Trump in what has been viewed as a last-ditch attempt to save face in the race and please his supporters.
Christie began his campaign with enthusiasm and considerable hype, but his momentum quickly fizzled after a series of gaffes and missteps in the early primary races. With his sagging poll numbers and unfavorable odds, many political pundits have speculated that it was only a matter of time before Christie threw in the towel. However, the long-time Governor appears determined to stay the course.
In an attempt to shift the narrative and reverse his campaign’s current fortunes, Christie released a series of campaign ads criticising Trump. These ads have focused heavily on Trump’s lack of experience in the political world. Additionally, the ads attempt to cast doubt on Trump’s policy proposals and reliability. In one of the ads, Christie declares, “We don’t need an amateur in Washington. We need a professional who can get things done. That’s why I’m running for president.”
Despite the strong rhetoric in Christie’s campaign ad, it is unlikely he will be able to effectively take down a candidate as formidable as Trump and break back into the race. However, the fierce stance taken by Christie towards Trump and his increasingly bold rhetoric shows a level of politicking that was not seen in him during the early stages of his campaign.
This could be seen as a sign of Christie’s growing frustration over the lack of progress in the race. Or it could be viewed as Christie’s final attempt to remain relevant amongst the crowded field of candidates in an increasingly competitive landscape. Whatever the motivation, it appears that Christie has decided to go all-in and challenge Trump head-on in what could be his final bid to save face in the presidential election.
