In the wake of the 2020 presidential election, voter data from the state of Delaware shows that many citizens have switched their political party registrations from Democratic to Republican.
President Joe Biden was a lifelong resident of the First State, and as a result, the state was firmly Democratic. As the election came to a close however, the trends began to change in a surprising manner.
Joe Biden won 66.68% of the vote in Delaware in 2020, a decrease from Hillary Clinton’s 66.71% in 2016. Yet, despite his weakness in the state, the party registrations in Delaware still shifted from blue to red at an alarming rate.
As of October 2020, the GOP’s total membership in Delaware had risen by 3.37%. Concurrently, the Democratic Party’s total membership none declined by 3.81%. This change in party registration between the months of January and October have been the largest shift the Dead Down state has seen in a decade.
While the exact reason for this shift is unclear, some theorize it could be related to the Biden campaign’s focus on identity politics and lack of rallying around core Democratic principles. Others posit that the presence of Joe Biden, his campaigns emphasis on being a unifying figure, and the lack of a clear Democratic message on policy may have caused grassroots voters to search elsewhere for alternative options.
Overall, the shift in party registration away from the Democratic Party in Delaware could be interpreted as an indication of slight electoral discontent, especially in Biden’s home state. There is no clear cause of despair, but one thing is certain—Delaware’s first-ever president could have a problem within his own backyard.
