In an effort to show support to both Israel and Palestine, President Joe Biden recently announced that the United States would provide funds to support both sides in the recent Israel-Hamas war while advocating for a “durable and lasting” ceasefire.
The Biden administration has long been supportive of Israel’s right to self-defense and its recent violent conflict with Hamas in Gaza. At the same time, they have also been vocal in their support of the Palestinians and their right to freedom and peace. With both sides embroiled in a raging war, Biden has continued to push both Israel and Hamas for a peaceful resolution while supporting both sides with much-needed humanitarian assistance.
Biden has allocated a total of $130 million in aid to both Israel and Palestine from the U.S. Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund. The aid is intended to go toward providing relief for those affected by the conflict which includes the rebuilding of infrastructure, the provision of basic services, healthcare, and psychosocial support services.
Biden’s announcement of funding for both sides has been met with mixed reactions from both Israel and Palestine. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed the funds, stating that the U.S. has always stood by Israel and Israel appreciates the support. Hamas, on the other hand, has denounced the offer of aid, citing that it is not enough to address the needs of Palestinians and that it does not amount to direct negotiations or a genuine commitment from the U.S. to work with Hamas.
The US’s continued efforts to support both Israel and Palestine, however, demonstrate Biden’s commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict. He has encouraged both sides to meet at the negotiating table while also pushing for the protection of both human and civil rights. He has also emphasized the need for a two-state solution that respects the right of both sides to exist in peace and security.
In the wake of the continuous fighting between Israel and Hamas, President Biden has taken a measured approach to show support for both sides and find a way to bring long-term stability to the region. While his efforts of providing relief for both sides may not immediately bring an end to the conflict, it is an important step in the right direction and marks a new era in US foreign policy.
